The touristy Illawarra Fly Tree Top Walk is one of four steel tree top walks in the world – all of which are in Australia. The others are in the Otway Ranges VIC, Tahune State Forest TAS, and the Walpole-Nornalup National Park WA.<br /><br /><p align="center"><a title="Illawarra Fly Tree Top Walk, Knights Hill, New South Wales, Australia, Knights Tower IMG_4511_Illawarra_Fly by Darren Stones, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/photojour/3541032225/"><img height="500" alt="Illawarra Fly Tree Top Walk, Knights Hill, New South Wales, Australia, Knights Tower IMG_4511_Illawarra_Fly" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2244/3541032225_d4c2cb2c1e.jpg" width="334" /></a><br /><span style="color:#ffcc33;">Knights Tower</span></p><br />Amongst the trees of the Illawarra Escarpment, the view over the fertile hinterland and curving coastline is stunning. The refreshing vista inspires freedom – just like a bird. With two cantilevers hanging above the trees, visitors experience exhilaration or nervousness. The narrow spiral staircase to the top of Knights Tower reaches the highest point of the Illawarra Fly, and at 45 metres up, one can feel the breeze and witness the panoramic view. See the glistening waters of Lake Illawarra, look towards Port Kembla, and gaze at delightful Shellharbour.<br /><br />Tower 9 is the base for a cantilever that is suspended 26 metres up. The views of steep rocky slopes, forested areas, and the golden sandy coastline are spectacular. The gentle motion of the cantilever either excites or frights, but for most it’s the former. Kids, and kids at heart, can be seen with a smile as they experience the moderate swaying.<br /><br /><p align="center"><a title="Illawarra Fly Tree Top Walk, Knights Hill, New South Wales, Australia IMG_4536_Illawarra_Fly by Darren Stones, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/photojour/3533313580/"><img height="334" alt="Illawarra Fly Tree Top Walk, Knights Hill, New South Wales, Australia IMG_4536_Illawarra_Fly" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3348/3533313580_8deb95deb8.jpg" width="500" /></a><br /><span style="color:#ffcc33;">Tower 9 cantilever. Go to the edge!</span></p><br />Signs advise visitors to refrain from running on the see-through walkways, however during my visit the excitement inevitably bubbled over amongst the younger brigade. The walkways are no place to go rummaging through the loose change pocket either. If you pull out coins here, you’ll risk losing them to forest floor.<br /><br /><p align="center"><a title="Illawarra Fly Tree Top Walk, Knights Hill, New South Wales, Australia IMG_4472_Illawarra_Fly by Darren Stones, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/photojour/3546825509/"><img height="500" alt="Illawarra Fly Tree Top Walk, Knights Hill, New South Wales, Australia IMG_4472_Illawarra_Fly" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3632/3546825509_ddf258456a.jpg" width="334" /></a><br /><span style="color:#ffcc33;">Elevated walkway through the tree tops</span></p><br />The eco-friendly visitor centre consists a café`, retail outlet selling quality souvenirs, visitor information, and toilets. Light meals are available, with the café` providing prompt service and comfortable modern facilities. A large outdoor paved dining area gives visitors opportunity to breathe in the fresh forest air whilst sipping on a latte` or enjoying a Devonshire tea.<br /><br />Upon leaving the visitor centre, meander along the track through the forest and enjoy designated points of interest. Take a peek at Wombat Junction and check to see if the local resident is in the burrow. A little further along the track is The Black Stump. The cause of the stump being black is due to it being struck by a bolt of lightning many years ago, apparently.<br /><br /><p align="center"><a title="Illawarra Fly Tree Top Walk, Knights Hill, New South Wales, Australia IMG_4548_Illawarra_Fly by Darren Stones, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/photojour/3606634124/"><img height="334" alt="Illawarra Fly Tree Top Walk, Knights Hill, New South Wales, Australia IMG_4548_Illawarra_Fly" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3358/3606634124_2c6f0839bf.jpg" width="500" /></a><br /><span style="color:#ffcc33;">Visitors walking along a section of steel walkway 40m long between Towers 8 and 9</span></p><br />With the 500 metre long structure supported by 10 towers, there’s minimal impact on the surrounding environment which consists warm temperate rainforest and tree ferns with decorative fronds. Also, keep the peepers wide open for bird species including: Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoo, Crimson Rosella, Laughing Kookaburra, Powerful Owl and Eastern Whipbird.<br /><br /><p align="center"><a title="Illawarra Fly Tree Top Walk, Knights Hill, New South Wales, Australia IMG_4538_Illawarra_Fly by Darren Stones, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/photojour/3541754861/"><img height="500" alt="Illawarra Fly Tree Top Walk, Knights Hill, New South Wales, Australia IMG_4538_Illawarra_Fly" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2023/3541754861_06958099bf.jpg" width="334" /></a><br /><span style="color:#ffcc33;">A view along the section of steel walkway to Tower 9. The tower is supported by cables which are anchored on the forest floor</span></p><br />Of course there’s always one show-off who will do something out of the box. During my visit, I witnessed a middle-aged man climb onto the railing at the end of the Tower 9 cantilever. Onlookers gasped in amazement, and his wife and children were not impressed.<br /><br /><p align="center"><a title="Illawarra Fly Tree Top Walk, Knights Hill, New South Wales, Australia IMG_4524_Illawarra_Fly by Darren Stones, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/photojour/3636478415/"><img height="500" alt="Illawarra Fly Tree Top Walk, Knights Hill, New South Wales, Australia IMG_4524_Illawarra_Fly" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2322/3636478415_6a7d701468.jpg" width="334" /></a><br /><span style="color:#ffcc33;">Supported by two cables, the cantilever is suspended above the tree tops and provides visitors with a bird’s-eye view towards the coast</span></p><br />The tree top walk took six months to construct, and was completed in February 2008. A team of six assembled and erected the structure on site, and each span between the ten support towers is 40 metres long.<br /><br />A shuttle bus – which looks like an elongated golf cart – is available for those requiring assistance. But, if you’re fit as a fiddle and desire a ride, just holler and state your case. Sure saves walking up the gently sloping hill.<br /><br /><strong>Further information:</strong><br /><br />Allow 45-60 minutes for the walk, and most importantly, take your camera. Sunny days are best for viewing and photography. Open 9am-5pm daily, the Illawarra Fly is at 182 Knights Hill Road, Knights Hill NSW (25 minutes from Kiama via Jamberoo and the Jamberoo Mountain Road). A family-friendly attraction. Adult: $22.00, Child: $9.50 (6 – 16 years), Family: $55.00 (2 Adults + 2 Children), Seniors: $20.00. <a href="http://www.illawarrafly.com/">http://www.illawarrafly.com/</a><br /><br />© Darren Stones 2009<br />All Rights Reserved<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/22998420-2661089367321592680?l=dgstonesphotography.blogspot.com'/></div>Darren Stoneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12873728147798544849dgstonesphotojour@yahoo.com.au0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22998420.post-887863738757703042009-07-06T09:14:00.011+10:002009-07-06T09:43:38.451+10:00Kiama Lighthouse photograph chosen as ADPOTD Photo Of The Day<span style="font-size:85%;color:#ffcc33;"><strong>By Darren Stones</strong></span><br /><br />What a thrill! Head for the aptly named Blowhole Point and witness the powerful gush of sea water and inspect the historic lighthouse. With a little patience, good timing, and favourable weather, both attractions can be photographed within a frame.<br /><br /><p align="center"><a title="Kiama Lighthouse and Blowhole, New South Wales, Australia IMG_4161_Kiama by Darren Stones, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/photojour/3525322744/"><img height="334" alt="Kiama Lighthouse and Blowhole, New South Wales, Australia IMG_4161_Kiama" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3570/3525322744_50471a4527.jpg" width="500" /></a><br /><span style="color:#ffcc33;">Kiama Blowhole and Lighthouse at Blowhole Point</span></p><br /><br />Due to Mother Nature’s fickle manner, the blowhole is often a fizzer. It’s amusing to say the least.<br /><br /><p align="center"><a title="Kiama Lighthouse, New South Wales, Australia IMG_3977_Kiama by Darren Stones, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/photojour/3559797738/"><img height="500" alt="Kiama Lighthouse, New South Wales, Australia IMG_3977_Kiama" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2475/3559797738_fe361bd768.jpg" width="333" /></a><br /><span style="color:#ffcc33;">Kiama Lighthouse</span></p><br /><br />The scenic north-facing rock pool is ideal for a swim. RSLs by nature serve meals similar to what middle-class suburbanites eat at home, and it’s for this reason budget conscious travellers with a penchant for home-cooked meals dine at club bistros.<br /><br />The Merimbula RSL has a laid-back, welcoming feel and its open-plan building provides views towards the scenic Merimbula Lake. The dining room is spacious with good space separating tables – ideal for those wanting a reasonably private chat.<br /><br />Bronwyn and I were cheerfully greeted by a host and were swiftly guided with accompanying menus to our table by the window. We were politely asked if we’d dined here before (which we had) and were informed of the soup, roast and fish offerings of the day.<br /><br />We admired the vista out the window, took a sip on our respective beverages and then it was down to a careful study of the menu. The entrees are of the usual fare; soup, garlic bread and prawns. But it’s the locally-grown oysters as an appetiser which seems to get top billing.<br /><br />As usual, we bypass the starters and entrees – which ranged between $5.50 to $15.50 – and cast our eyes over the mains list.<br /><br />The orders are taken at a dedicated counter area where the register is kept busy. It’s a hive of activity behind the servery with the chefs moving in sync. The service is smart, quick and professional. Runs like clockwork and meals keep getting churned out for the hungry patrons.<br /><br />Looking down the menu, the following headings consisted of a variety of culinary options; fresh Pambula rock oysters (the usual kilpatrick gets a mention), pasta and risotto, pizzas, mains (which consisted of the ubiquitous roast of the day and chicken dishes), seafood, from the char-grill, and on and on it went until Sam’s chinese appeared. Oh, and the children’s menu was available for those 12 and under – that made me contemplate whether a 13-year-old is a child or not.<br /><br />Being on a tight budget, we chose the roast of the day. It was lamb with roast vegetables. I chose the large size for $14.90 and Bronwyn ordered the small size for $9.90. Let’s be frank here, I’m glad I consumed a schooner of ale before feasting on the lukewarm plate of meat and veg because my appetite didn’t give way to wanting the dish warmer.<br /><br />Nevertheless, it was the type of super-saver meal we were seeking and it satisfied the tummy grumbles. The bread rolls provided good filling and we enjoyed a good night out.<br />My advice: book a window table and enjoy the view, food and company.<br /><br /><strong><span style="color:#ffcc33;">Further information:</span><br /></strong>Merimbula RSL<br />52-54 Main Street<br />Merimbula NSW 3548<br />Phone: 02 6495 1502<br /><a href="http://www.merimbularsl.com.au/" target="_blank">http://www.merimbularsl.com.au/</a><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/22998420-4885111911441558946?l=dgstonesphotography.blogspot.com'/></div>Darren Stoneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12873728147798544849dgstonesphotojour@yahoo.com.au0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22998420.post-15810416229517838652009-06-14T10:50:00.015+10:002009-06-14T12:09:36.052+10:00Christmas before July - Special Offer<span style="font-size:85%;color:#ffcc33;"><strong>By Darren Stones<br /></strong></span><br />Until June 30 2009, you have the opportunity to save AU$222.80 on this special offer.<br /><br />Purchase three Darren Stones RedBubble medium-sized framed prints via RedBubble in one transaction, and you’ll receive one Darren Stones RedBubble medium-sized framed print and 10 Darren Stones RedBubble cards for FREE.<br /><br />That’s right – you’ll get four medium-sized framed prints and 10 gift cards for the price of three medium-sized framed prints.<br /><br />The cost to you is only AU$495.00. As a regular visitor to the Sapphire Coast region in New South Wales, more often than not I travel from Melbourne and stay overnight at Lakes Entrance en route to Eden or Merimbula. It’s possible to bypass this popular coastal resort town by leaving Highway No. 1 at Bairnsdale and journeying via Bruthen.<br /><br />My recent visit to Lakes, as it’s affectionately known, was an eye-opener. The town’s iconic timber footbridge, that crosses the Cunningham Arm to the Southern Ocean, is being demolished and replaced with a brand spanking new concrete structure. It’s an exciting development and one which is sure to change the look of the gorgeous Lakes Entrance landscape.<br /><br /><br /><p align="center"><a title="Lakes Entrance, Victoria, Australia, paddle boats IMG_3380_Lakes_Entrance by Darren Stones, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/photojour/3547749725/"><img height="334" alt="Lakes Entrance, Victoria, Australia, paddle boats IMG_3380_Lakes_Entrance" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3409/3547749725_cbbbf322a1.jpg" width="500" /></a><br /><span style="color:#ffcc33;">Paddleboats open for business<br />Photo: Darren Stones</span></p><br /><br />Paddle boats can be hired at Lakes, and recently I witnessed some not so savvy tourists hiring recreational water craft. One bloke, dressed in very swish trousers and shirt, jumped into a paddle ski which was half-filled with water. To say the onlookers were pissing their pants with laughter would be an understatement. Alas, the smartly dressed bloke soldiered on like a trooper and paddled his way out to the never never after figuring out how to use the implements he’d hired.<br /><br /><br /><p align="center"><a title="Lakes Entrance, Victoria, Australia, recreation IMG_3321_Lakes_Entrance by Darren Stones, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/photojour/3548770440/"><img height="334" alt="Lakes Entrance, Victoria, Australia, recreation IMG_3321_Lakes_Entrance" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3547/3548770440_f8acbfa23b.jpg" width="500" /></a><br /><span style="color:#ffcc33;">What’s so bloody funny huh?<br />Photo: Darren Stones</span></p><br /><br />Bronwyn and I meandered over the sand hill to discover a bloke searching for lost stuff in the trampled sand. Using a rather sophisticated metal detector, he seemed intent on finding a gold nugget the size of a small car. Suffice to say, I hung around for a while in case he needed a hand to carry it back to his hatchback. Bronwyn, being a keen fossicker herself, decided to stick around, too, and sweet talk the bloke. Not that we were wanting in on the action in case he found something out of the norm, but all bases were being covered in case he passed out with shock. Anyway, we bombed out – as you’d expect.<br /><br /><br /><p align="center"><a title="Lakes Entrance, Victoria, Australia, paddle boats IMG_3336_Lakes_Entrance by Darren Stones, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/photojour/3551530422/"><img height="334" alt="Lakes Entrance, Victoria, Australia, paddle boats IMG_3336_Lakes_Entrance" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3617/3551530422_d96a442f31.jpg" width="500" /></a><br /><span style="color:#ffcc33;">Paddle boats for hire<br />Photo: Darren Stones</span></p><br /><br />From there we ventured off for some grub. The Lakes Entrance Bowls Club puts on a fair spread for those seeking more than 64 meal options, so we went the whole hog and dined in style. Prawns, booze and bread rolls – just for starters. After all that we got to the mains. We scoffed them off and then waddled our way to the lounge to let our stomachs recover – which they eventually did about an hour or so later.<br /><br />After a delightful chat about this, that, and the other, we headed back to the Sand Bar Motel and did you know what. Yep, we watched TV until the wee hours.<br /><br /><span style="color:#ffcc33;"><strong>Recreation:<br /></strong></span>Lakes Entrance Paddleboats<br />Phone: 03 5155 2753<br />Mobile: 0419 552 753<br /><a href="http://lakes-entrance.com/paddleboats/index.htm">http://lakes-entrance.com/paddleboats/index.htm</a><br /><br /><strong><span style="color:#ffcc33;">Dining:<br /></span></strong>Lakes Entrance Bowls Club<br />Cnr Rowe &amp; Bulmer Street<br />Lakes Entrance, Victoria 3909<br />Phone: 03 5155 3578.<br /><a href="http://www.lakesbowls.com.au/">http://www.lakesbowls.com.au/</a><br /><br /><strong><span style="color:#ffcc33;">Accommodation:<br /></span></strong>Sand Bar Motel<br />637 Esplanade<br />Lakes Entrance, Victoria 3909<br />Phone: 03 5155 2567<br /><a href="http://www.sandbarmotel.com/">http://www.sandbarmotel.com/</a><br /><br />© Darren Stones 2009<br />All Rights Reserved<br /><br /><br /><p align="center"><object height="300" width="400"><param name="flashvars" value="offsite=true&amp;lang=en-us&amp;page_show_url=%2Fphotos%2Fphotojour%2Fsets%2F72157604584585905%2Fshow%2F&amp;page_show_back_url=%2Fphotos%2Fphotojour%2Fsets%2F72157604584585905%2F&amp;set_id=72157604584585905&amp;jump_to="><param name="movie" value="http://www.flickr.com/apps/slideshow/show.swf?v=71649"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><br /> <embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.flickr.com/apps/slideshow/show.swf?v=71649" allowfullscreen="true" flashvars="offsite=true&lang=en-us&page_show_url=%2Fphotos%2Fphotojour%2Fsets%2F72157604584585905%2Fshow%2F&page_show_back_url=%2Fphotos%2Fphotojour%2Fsets%2F72157604584585905%2F&set_id=72157604584585905&jump_to=" width="400" height="300"></embed></object></p><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/22998420-5071489749460442808?l=dgstonesphotography.blogspot.com'/></div>Darren Stoneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12873728147798544849dgstonesphotojour@yahoo.com.au0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22998420.post-661381680447225332009-05-20T23:23:00.004+10:002009-05-21T00:03:58.332+10:00Australian Digital Photography Awards 2009 - Open for entries<span style="color:#ffcc33;">By Darren Stones<br /></span><br />The Australian Photographic Society, of which I'm a member, is conducting the Australian Digital Photography Awards 2009.<br /><br />One great thing about this competition is, there's no cost to enter. The challenge is accepting Australian Travel Photography entries, and Australian Travel Writing and Photography entries for four weeks.<br /><br />The primary purpose of the challenge is to encourage travel photographers, and travel writers and photographers, who are established in the business, in the process of doing so, or are enthusiasts. As a result of the challenge, Greg Barton, Editor, <em><a href="http://australiantraveller.com/">Australian Traveller</a></em> magazine will choose a photograph, and a travel article, from the entries to publish in <em><a href="http://australiantraveller.com/">Australian Traveller</a></em> magazine. Winners will also be rewarded with a 12 month subscription to the magazine.<br /><br />The challenge is sponsored by Australian Traveller magazine, Kathy Thompson - Photographer, RedBubble, Darren Stones - Journalist and Photographer, John Conway - Photographer, and Anne O'Connor - Photographer. Check challenge details for information <a href="http://www.redbubble.com/groups/australian-travel-photography-and-writing/challenges/6334-australian-traveller">here</a>.<br /><br /><p align="center"><a title="Beechworth, Victoria, Australia, bank IMG_9968_Beechworth by Darren Stones, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/photojour/2478370176/"><img height="334" alt="Beechworth, Victoria, Australia, bank IMG_9968_Beechworth" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3204/2478370176_76787e0142.jpg" width="500" /></a><br /><span style="color:#ffcc33;">Beechworth by Darren Stones<br />Cover image for the Australian Traveller challenge<br />Published in the Apr/May 09 edition of Australian Traveller</span></p><br /><br />Recently, I approached Greg Barton, Editor, <a href="http://australiantraveller.com/"><em>Australian Traveller</em></a> magazine seeking his interest in becoming group Patron of the Australian Travel Photography and Writing group. Greg jumped at the opportunity and is now one of our chief sponsors via Australian Traveller magazine.<br /><br />The group currently has 317 members, and the number is steadily rising. With new initiatives being implemented, members are becoming increasingly active by submitting high quality Australian travel photographs, journals and writings. Members are also becoming increasingly busy within the group's forums.<br /><br />As part of my role in hosting the group, which I originated in December 2008, I promote the group, our members, and works they submit. Also, the group is becoming a portal for editors and publishers seeking quality Australian travel imagery and writing. In recent times, the standard of work has risen and so has member activity. Sponsors are seeing the benefit of being associated with the group as their brand is being advertised across the internet via our base at RedBubble.<br /><br />Some recent initiatives I've undertaken and implemented:<br /><br /><ul><li><a href="http://www.redbubble.com/groups/australian-travel-photography-and-writing/forums/3945">My interviews with group members</a></li><li><a class="title" href="http://www.redbubble.com/groups/australian-travel-photography-and-writing/forums/6133">AU travellers show &amp; tell &amp; ask</a> </li><li><a href="http://www.redbubble.com/groups/australian-travel-photography-and-writing/challenges">Various group challenges</a></li><li><a href="http://www.redbubble.com/people/dgstones/journal/3065972-special-announcement-australian-travel-group-patron-is-greg-barton-editor-australian-traveller-magazine">Inviting Greg Barton to be Patron</a></li><li><a href="http://twitter.com/autravel">AU travel group Twitter account</a></li><li><a href="http://www.redbubble.com/groups/australian-travel-photography-and-writing/forums">Constructed a forum within the AU travel group</a></li></ul><br />So, with all this happening, it seems the group has bigger and better things to come. Further sponsorship has been secured, and new sponsors will be sought in due course. Sponsors are welcome to make contact and can find details via my contact page. I believe the <a href="http://www.redbubble.com/groups/australian-travel-photography-and-writing">Australian Travel Photography and Writing</a> group is becoming increasingly attractive, and given the brand names associating with the group, it seems a good time to become involved.<br /><br />Find below a collection of my works available for sale at RedBubble. As a resident of the northern suburbs, it makes sense to head north and avoid those pesky traffic lights.<br /><br />The Easter weekend weather was perfect, and the four-day break was even better due to the Essendon Bombers defeating the Carlton Blues on Saturday night. And, I consumed more than enough chocolate eggs, so that should keep shopkeepers happy for another year.<br /><br />Bronwyn and I fired up the Ford Falcon on Easter Sunday at 2.30pm and headed for the Macedon Ranges via Sunbury and Romsey. Along the way, we saw a pink gelati van strategically parked near the Melbourne Airport, and it seemed to be catering to the horde of plane spotters congregated in the designated viewing area.<br /><br />Our trip was premeditated because I wanted to enjoy a few hours of photography. Having spent an hour or so on Saturday researching various locations in the Macedon region, I was keen to make a good photograph of Hanging Rock.<br /><br />It’s been a few months between landscape photography shoots due to studies and other stuff, but I remembered aperture settings and how to correctly use my polariser and graduated filters. It was pure bliss to be out and about in the fresh country air taking photographs again.<br /><br />Composition techniques and searching for the angle of light were my photographic priorities whilst driving around looking for interesting subjects. First thing that caught my eye was a vineyard at Hesket, just west of Romsey. The soft autumn sunlight was highlighting the changing colours of the leaves and the eucalypt trees in the background.<br /><br /><br /><p align="center"><a title="Hesket, Victoria, Australia, winery IMG_3243_Hesket by Darren Stones, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/photojour/3433736031/"><img height="334" alt="Hesket, Victoria, Australia, winery IMG_3243_Hesket" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3631/3433736031_5fcd61334c.jpg" width="500" /></a><br /><span style="color:#ffcc33;">Winery at Hesket<br />Photo: Darren Stones</span></p><br />The shot of the grapevines required a polariser filter to reduce reflections on the leaves, and a 2 stop neutral density graduated filter to reduce the brightness of the sky. I attached my camera on the tripod and used a 70-200mm f/4L lens to compress the scene and attain a tight composition. I took about 10 shots in this location in both landscape and portrait orientation and I’m reasonably pleased with the outcome.<br /><br />After driving around Hanging Rock – which rises 105 metres from the surrounding landscape – I noticed how difficult it is to make an interesting photograph of it. With trees and farm properties in the foreground, I realised I’d have to closely investigate the back roads looking for an interesting angle. Seems the best time to photograph Hanging Rock is at sunrise, so a return journey is in order.<br /><br /><br /><p align="center"><a title="Newham, Victoria, Australia IMG_3250_Newham by Darren Stones, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/photojour/3433876159/"><img height="334" alt="Newham, Victoria, Australia IMG_3250_Newham" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3575/3433876159_8107fd6fbc.jpg" width="500" /></a><br /><span style="color:#ffcc33;">Country road near Newham<br />Photo: Darren Stones</span></p>Whilst driving the back roads, I witnessed the sunlight emphasising the trunks and limbs on towering gum trees. Given I’m always looking for leading lines for a photograph, I found a few spots near the village of Newham and began taking shots. With the ever present Hanging Rock beckoning me, I chose to concentrate my photography on the landscape and trees. It was an excellent opportunity to use my 10-22mm wide-angle lens and create depth in the scenes.<br /><br />Being ever alert, Bronwyn spotted a mob of eastern grey kangaroos amongst trees in the grounds of the Hanging Rock racecourse. It would have been great to photograph the roos, but I was content to see them graze in the shade.<br /><br /><p align="center"><a title="Newham, Victoria, Australia, looking towards Hanging Rock IMG_3258_Newham by Darren Stones, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/photojour/3433586287/"><img height="334" alt="Newham, Victoria, Australia, looking towards Hanging Rock IMG_3258_Newham" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3595/3433586287_960545ed05.jpg" width="500" /></a><br /><span style="color:#ffcc33;">Looking towards Hanging Rock near Newham<br />Photo: Darren Stones</span></p>Come 6pm, the sun was about to disappear and the golden hour was over. The fact that it's such an important part of Australia's travel and tourism industry.<br /><br />Sure, its many twists and bends add to the grandeur and mystique, but it's a river which continues to attract people from far and wide. Not surprising really given its history and beauty.<br /><br />Please enjoy this slideshow of images of the Murray River.<br /><br />The slideshow can also be seen in larger format here:<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/photojour/sets/72157606659251100/show/" target="_blank">http://www.flickr.com/photos/photojour/sets/72157606659251100/show/</a><br /><br /><br /><p align="center"><object width=" height="><param name="flashvars" value="&amp;offsite=true&amp;lang=en-us&amp;page_show_url=%2Fphotos%2Fphotojour%2Fsets%2F72157606659251100%2Fshow%2F&amp;page_show_back_url=%2Fphotos%2Fphotojour%2Fsets%2F72157606659251100%2F&amp;set_id=72157606659251100&amp;jump_to="><param name="movie" value="http://www.flickr.com/apps/slideshow/show.swf?v=67348"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><embed src="http://www.flickr.com/apps/slideshow/show.swf?v=" width="400" height="300" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" flashvars="&amp;offsite=true&amp;lang=en-us&amp;page_show_url=%2Fphotos%2Fphotojour%2Fsets%2F72157606659251100%2Fshow%2F&amp;page_show_back_url=%2Fphotos%2Fphotojour%2Fsets%2F72157606659251100%2F&amp;set_id=72157606659251100&amp;jump_to="></embed></object></p><p align="center"><a title="Khancoban, New South Wales, Australia, Murray River IMG_8059_Khancoban by Darren Stones, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/photojour/3343283409/"><img height="334" alt="Khancoban, New South Wales, Australia, Murray River IMG_8059_Khancoban" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3346/3343283409_6e5a060778.jpg" width="500" /></a><br /><span style="color:#ffcc33;">The Murray River near Khancoban, New South Wales, Australia</span></p><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/22998420-5905129139910093216?l=dgstonesphotography.blogspot.com'/></div>Darren Stoneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12873728147798544849dgstonesphotojour@yahoo.com.au0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22998420.post-36063873327731513342009-03-15T17:14:00.007+11:002009-03-21T13:18:21.425+11:00Canberra gets a well-deserved vote<span style="font-size:85%;color:#ffcc33;"><strong>By Darren Stones</strong></span><br /><br />Most Australians think of Canberra as a place where well-groomed and conscientious politicians go to serve their constituents to improve the people’s standard of living. All jokes aside, Canberra is a beaut place to visit for the rank and file during the year. And, many of the attractions are free!<br /><br /><p align="center"><a title="Parliament House, Canberra, ACT, Australia IMG_8596_Parliament_House by Darren Stones, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/photojour/2481763849/"><img height="334" alt="Parliament House, Canberra, ACT, Australia IMG_8596_Parliament_House" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3078/2481763849_b940546d74.jpg" width="500" /></a><br /><span style="color:#ffcc33;">Parliament House, Canberra</span></p><br /><br />Parliament House is an imposing building with its impressive architecture and flagpole dominating Capitol Hill. It’s a building which displays fine art, craft and is melded into the landscape. The main foyer features 48 marble columns which resemble the trunks of eucalypts. If you’re keen to witness Australia’s elected representatives getting into a bunfight over policy differences, feel free to contact Parliament House to arrange your prime viewing seat.<br /><br /><p align="center"><a title="Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia IMG_8372_Canberra by Darren Stones, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/photojour/3203210522/"><img height="500" alt="Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia IMG_8372_Canberra" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3456/3203210522_b26a82c73c.jpg" width="334" /></a><br /><span style="color:#ffcc33;">Canberra from Mount Ainslie</span></p><br /><br />The view from the Mount Ainslie lookout offers a panoramic vista, with the most popular view looking south over the War Memorial, down Anzac Parade, Lake Burley Griffin, Old Parliament House and New Parliament House.
