“The Royal Exhibition Building is an imposing sight, and even better at dusk when it’s floodlit. When I was making this photograph, some friendly possums came to check out the action. With large trees located in the Carlton Gardens, in which this building is located, I think it’s great that there’s wildlife in such a location so close to Melbourne’s CBD.

When I arrived at the location, I walked around the building and decided to sit down and look at it for about 20 minutes, as I was rather keen to gain a better sense of the importance of this World Heritage-listed building" - Darren Stones

“Lakes Entrance evokes a strong sense of fun and the rekindling of memorable experiences for me. As a young boy in the 1970s, my hard-working parents introduced me and my younger brother to this coastal paradise during a family holiday.

As a kid, I remember a severe thunderstorm that struck the town and began to flood the busy fish and chip shop in Myer Street. The staff continued to serve the customers during the storm and we ended up getting our food and a good soaking. But we didn’t mind because we were on holidays and it was all part of the adventure.

When approaching ‘Lakes’ – as it’s affectionately known – I begin to get excited at the thought of seeing the lakes system and picturesque foreshore areas. I feel as if Lakes Entrance has become an integral part of my life. It’s as if the place is flowing through my veins.

Bronwyn and I shared our first holiday together in ‘Lakes’ during late December 1987, where we stayed at the Bamboo Motor Inn, and ever since we have enjoyed revisiting the town which has become an important part of our lives. I introduced her to the town and she has developed a strong attachment to it, too. We recently found a new vantage point that overlooks the town and we embraced this photographic experience together. Christmas Day flash flooding brings out hoons

Local family celebrations came to a sudden halt when a severe thunderstorm storm caused flash flooding in Mikado Street Glenroy on Christmas Day.

A male driving a four-wheel drive sped through the flood water and was heard yelling out to onlookers who were concerned that the wave action could cause water to enter their yards and cause damage.

Heavy rain caused Mikado Street to resemble a river and male drivers took their chances by driving through the water as local residents looked on.

A driver of a red hatchback sped up to enter the flood water and his car stalled in the water. He was able to re-start the car after a few minutes and reversed out of the water. Local residents looked on in amazement and commented on the stupidity of his actions.

Local resident Gordon Stones said it was the third time he has seen flash flooding in Mikado Street Glenroy since 1968.

The street drainage system could not cope with the deluge and the water covered the road, nature strips and footpaths.

I have had the pleasure to travel the Princes Highway between Melbourne and Merimbula on numerous occasions since 1987 and have regularly stopped at Cann River for a coffee break. The St John Anglican and Uniting Church at Cann River, Victoria, Australia is an attractive sight during autumn, with a magnificent array of colours on full display. The church is located in the main shopping area and pretty much stands out in a photographic sense as a subject to photograph.

Autumn is probably my favourite season of the year for photography as it presents brilliant landscape photography opportunities no matter what the weather conditions. If it's sunny, wider shots of the landscape are suggested. If it's cloudy, I prefer to get under the canopy of trees and focus on the trunks, branches and leaves - particularly if it is wet.

I photographed the church as I was returning from a longish trip via Bright and Canberra where the full pallette of autumn colours was on display. A magnificent trip, and most fruitful in regards to making a large collection of autumn imagery.

Who wants to go on a Holiday ... Holiday ... Holiday? Me, me, me, me

Every so often I get the opportunity to get away for a while to take care of my wellbeing and where photography is not the major reason for travelling.

Recently we visited Lakes Entrance for four nights as a result of having a winning bid on a short stay package through Travel Auctions. I bid on a package at the Glenara Motel, which provides basic accommodation for an affordable price right in the heart of town and directly across the road from the town's fishing fleet.

I bid $165.00 for three nights, but an option of the package was that if we commenced our stay on a Monday we could receive a fourth night free. So, we did that and that meant we paid $41.25 per night - a bargain!

We enjoyed some new sights and the highlight of our trip was a cruise on the Thunderbird, which took us out on the Gippsland lakes for 2.5 hours. The cruise left the jetty at Lakes Entrance and travelled as far as Paynesville via Metung. Lots of beautiful scenery, birdlife, plus cruising past yachts and those wetting a line.

We dined at the Lakes Entrance RSL one night, the Lakes Entrance Bowling Club twice, and the Pinnochio Inn Italian restaurant once. The bowling club was the pick of the venues, however we enjoyed the Italian restaurant as it was a bit of a change for us as we usually dine at clubs and hotels.

On the Thursday we walked over the footbridge and along the surf beach to the entrance and return. About a 6-kilometre walk, which took us four hours as we were taking photos along the way and doing some sightseeing.

I came back from the trip with some good memories and a new collection of images. A good trip was had.

Travel Photography - Landscape

Photographing outback areas can be a real challenge due to the extremes of weather and Perry Sandhills is no exception - particularly if it is hot and windy. And when travelling through an area where your time is limited, you really do have to make the most of the opportunities you have.

I photographed this section of the Perry Sandhills at Wentworth in New South Wales during the cooler months whilst touring the Murray River region. Being a photographer who prefers to shoot landscapes during the afternoon, the weather was quite pleasant on this particular day. The green grass caught my eye in amongst the sandhills and I thought this was just begging to be photographed.

Located in outback New South Wales, the sandhills originated after an ice age 40,000 years ago and have been formed by wind erosion over thousands of years.

Photographing pelicans is always fun, but when you get the opportunity get up close to one in their natural habitat, the experience rises to a whole new level.

I photographed this pelican on the North Arm at Lakes Entrance in Victoria, and I have to admit it was a buzz to be able to get this close. It was getting late in the day, and the light was just perfect for this shot as the detail is amazing.

Each afternoon at Pebbly Beach, the kangaroos emerge from the forest and come down to the grassy mounds adjacent the beach. Fascinating to watch them, and a real thrill to get up close with one.

Successfully completed the Mental Health First Aid Course

During October 2011, I undertook and successfully completed the Mental Health First Aid Course under the instruction of Master Instructor Joe Zammit of the Norwood Association. I have learnt new skills in how to deliver Mental Health First Aid to a person until professional treatment is sought and received, or until the crisis is resolved.

The 12-hour course taught me how to identify symptoms, causes and risk factors, and how to identify and respond to a person who may be suicidal, experiencing a panic attack or acute psychosis. I also learnt how to assist adults who are experiencing symptoms, causes and risk factors related to depression, anxiety, psychosis and substance abuse.

The course also taught me how to preserve health by minimising the risk of suicide and self harm, recognise different mental health disorders, explore treatment and resources for common disorders, improve my mental health literacy and help reduce stigma, and apply mental health first aid in acute situations.

As someone who has experienced depression and anxiety, undertaking and completing this course provided a great opportunity to reflect on my own experiences. I feel proud to have achieved this qualification, and given my increasing knowledge in this area due to research, learning and networking, I feel well placed to assist a person in need.

The Mental Health First Aid Course is an award winning course, which was developed in 2001 by Betty Kitchener and Professor Tony Jorm, with the objective to improve the mental health knowledge of members of the community.

Travel Photography - Photo Walk

The twisting coastline along the Great Ocean Road is an alluring environment for travel photographers wanting to connect with the characteristics of nature. A visit to this region allows the photographer the opportunity to become immersed in the relaxed seaside atmosphere, and to see that magical light during the afternoon golden hour. For the photographer who prefers to pace themself at a slower speed during their travels, this can be a rewarding experience both spiritually and photographically.

In the Surf Coast resort town of Anglesea, travel photographers can access photogenic points of the landscape that are within easy walking distance from where the Anglesea River meets the ocean. With each step the photographer creates a new connection with the landscape, and a new perspective presents itself for interpretation.

Sometimes we can get overwhelmed by the pace of life and there is a tendency to not see what we are looking at. By leaving home for a while, we do allow ourselves the scope to connect with nature and the landscape. We can begin to feel at ease and sense our photographic creativity emerging.

For a travel photographer, connecting with the landscape can be a spiritual experience and it can help lead to making photographs that are pleasing to the eye. By closing your eyes, listening to the sounds, and feeling the earth through your feet, you can become more aware of what is happening around you.

In this fast-paced age, I think we can become consumed by information overload, and it is best to allow ourselves the basic pleasure of putting ourselves amongst nature.

Recently, I visited Anglesea as part of a self-planned photographic trip, and I found myself better connecting with the landscape of the town. In years gone by, I had travelled through here without taking reasonable time to familiarise myself with the nuances and terrain. Having parked the car, I set out to explore the details and shapes. I soon discovered the curve of the river waterline, the grasses blowing in the breeze, the clouds dancing across the sky, and tree branches growing at angles.

As the afternoon light highlighted the shapes of the landscape, my sense of belonging became more tangible. I felt worthy of being there and it was a privilege to photograph such scenery. The sun was getting closer to the horizon and I knew my photographic time on that day was almost complete. But it wasn't, because I continued to explore and found the light of dusk just as enjoyable. I discovered another perspective and believe it was due to being in a relaxed state of mind.

Gibsons Beach near Port Campbell is one of those places that is often seen from the lookouts near the Twelve Apostles, but few actually take the steps down to the beach to walk along it.

As a travel photographer, there are times when the elements all come together to make for a good photograph. But being there is critical, and choosing the right time to be there does increase the chance of seeing these elements through the lens. This is one of my favourite photographs, and I think it's because I can imagine myself walking along that beach.

Lal Lal Moorabool Photographic Group

It's always good to travel to country areas in Victoria, and on Wednesday 19 October 2011, I had the pleasure to visit the Lal Lal Moorabool Photographic Group. What a great group of people who love their photography and a fun and relaxed night out.

The club is new and formed in early 2011 as a result of their first meeting on Wednesday 16 February. Club Secretary Kristina Kitchingman is a founding member who was involved in initiating the group and during my visit was kind to show me some information of how the club is evolving.

The Moorabool Shire is assisting the club with various activities and gave the club a grant of $3000.00 to kick them along. Club members are displaying prints and digitally projected images at the Bacchus Marsh Library, and members are supplying photographs to be included in an upcoming shire calendar.

Water drops thirty metres into the gorge formed by the collapse of lava tunnel apparently formed from Mt Buninyong, which is an extinct volcano.

Local newspaper coverage has assisted them in promotional activities and attracting new members, and already they have conducted their first exhibition on 26-28 August 2011 at the Lal Lal Soldiers Hall, which attracted 80 visitors each day.

The club is now discussing fundraising activities and they are looking to conduct sausage sizzles at the Bunnings stores at Ballarat and Melton. Field trip ideas are being discussed, with member input being encouraged. The club is conducting a competition each month with the aim to inspiring members to be active photographers.

An end-of-year BBQ and picnic is planned and will be held at Lal Lal Falls on Sunday 18 December 2011 at 12pm. BYO BBQ meat, picnic, drinks, chair, and of course your camera. Visitors are most welcome.

The club meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 7pm (except January) at the Lal Lal Soldiers Hall, 412 Clarendon Road Lal Lal. They invite visitors to join them for exploring all aspects of photography and the local area of Lal Lal. An information brochure is available on the night to visitors and prospective members.

Bad weather can make for good travel photography

When travelling to photograph those picture perfect locations like you see in the guidebooks, you need Mother Nature on your side to help you get the shots that you want. Everyone loves seeing images with blue skies and a few clouds, but what happens when you arrive, your time is limited, and the weather is overcast?

Research
Travel photographers usually research their chosen locations before heading off and try their best to arrive in locations when the weather conditions are suitable for attractive photography. But things do not always go according to plan.

Recently I spent some time on the Surf Coast in Victoria, and was scouting around the base of the cliff face at Rocky Point at Torquay. It is a great looking area adjacent to the Torquay Surf Club when the sun is shining – particularly in the morning.

On my first day in the area, I decided to go out during the afternoon to check out some potential spots for making landscape photographs. With the clouds looking ominous, a few spots of rain began to fall. Lots of people were around on the beach to that point, and then they decided to scatter. Suited me fine, as the clouds were beginning to look more interesting and I thought I could use them to my advantage.

Filters
With the use of my polariser and graduated neutral density filters, I was able to even out the lighting and use a slow shutter speed. This allowed me to use my creativity and create an image where I could blur the water. My shoes got absolutely soaked whilst taking this shot, as I had my camera set up on my tripod on a small rock shelf and some waves were still coming over the rocks. However, I thought it was worth the effort to photograph the scene, so continued on regardless. It was safe to do so as the tide was going out.

Creativity
So my advice to photographers is that when the weather begins to turn sour, don't run for cover so quickly. Stay behind and work the area with your creative hat on. By using a tripod you will be giving yourself time to slow down and analyse the scene, plus use those slower shutter speeds to create the sense of movement in the water.

If the rain is just a few spots, like it was for me during this shoot, protect your camera with a small cover such as a handkerchief. It worked fine for me and I left satisfied at having created a new photograph.

Mental Health First Aid Standard Course

At the moment I am half way through the Mental Health First Aid Standard Course under the instruction of Master Instructor Joe Zammit of the Norwood Association.

Joe is an absolute gentleman, and a great instructor, too. I have learnt a great deal about Mental Health First Aid already due to his skilful presentation, and I am looking forward to completing the course this Friday.

I enjoyed spending some personal time with Joe during our lunch break last Friday in a cafe at Docklands, where we shared ideas and discussed various issues about mental health, as well as chatting about presentation methods.

The course is for anyone, and as described on the Norwood Association site it "can help you identify symptoms, causes and risk factors and teach you how to identify and respond to someone who may be suicidal, experiencing a panic attack or acute psychosis."

The 12-hour course is designed to teach adults the skills to assist adults who are experiencing symptoms, causes and risk factors related to depression, anxiety, psychosis and substance abuse.

The course can teach you how to preserve health by minimising the risk of suicide and self harm, recognise different mental health disorders, explore treatment and resources for common disorders, improve mental health literacy and help reduce stigma, and apply mental health first aid in acute situations.

Mental health first aid is designed to assist a person until professional treatment is received or until the crisis is resolved.

The Mental Health First Aid Course is an award winning course, which was developed in 2001 by Betty Kitchener and Professor Tony Jorm, with the objective to improve the mental health knowledge of members of the community.

East Gippsland Photographic Society Photography Seminar

Had the pleasure of attending the Spectacular Photographic Seminar hosted by the East Gippsland Photographic Society in Bairnsdale Victoria on the weekend of October 8 and 9, 2011. The venue was St Mary's Church Hall and the seminar was great fun.

Friendly members from the club greeted Bronwyn and I, and we enjoyed making many new friends from the local club and various other photography clubs in Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia.

During my visit, I had little time for taking photos due to the busy program, however during the lunch break on the Saturday, I was able to take this shot of the stunning interior of St Mary's Catholic Church.

Day One ended with about 20-25 guests enjoying dinner together at the Bairnsdale Sporting Club. That was a good opportunity to meet some more friendly folks and discuss various photography related topics.

Stand Up Paddle Surfing is a sport which is something new to me. Whilst on a photographic working trip to Torquay in Victoria, I spotted this guy doing his thing off Point Danger. It was a breezy morning with clear conditions and surfers were out in force, too.

What struck me about this scene was that it's a fairly rare sight on the Surf Coast, so as any travel photographer would do, you start photographing things that are different and eye-catching. I like how the angle of light during the morning "Golden Hour" is highlighting his face, board and the wave behind him. A memorable morning.

Photographing kangaroos is always fun, but when you get the opportunity get up close to one near the ocean in a national park, the experience rises to a whole new level.

I photographed this Eastern Grey Kangaroo in the Murramarang National Park in New South Wales, and I have to admit it was a huge thrill. Given it was getting late in the day, I had to fire some fill flash to this scene so as to lighten up the front of the roo against the sublime backdrop of the ocean.

Each afternoon at Pebbly Beach, the kangaroos emerge from the forest and come down to the grassy mounds adjacent the beach. Fascinating to watch them, and a real thrill to get up close with one.

Point Danger to Rocky Point at Torquay

In Victoria, one of my favourite locations to enjoy a travel photography walk is the area on the Surf coast between Point Danger and Rocky Point at Torquay. Three hours along this stretch of Great Ocean Road coastline is a great way to relax and unwind, whilst also being able to let the creative juices flow.

Torquay can toss up some interesting weather conditions, and it really does make for great photographic opportunities. I usually park my car in the car park at Point Danger and begin to soak in that coastal ambience ... the smell of the sea, the rolling waves, the gentle breeze, and the surrounding photogenic vista.

Main Beach at Torquay

On a sunny day, the ocean is the bluest of blues, and the striking contrast from the ochre-coloured hue of the cliff faces and rounded rocks causes any photographer to get a little itchy in the trigger finger. With waves washing up and creating patterns along the shoreline, the wet sand adds a curving leading line into the distance.

Every so often, you can see something out of the norm, and a stack of rocks can become another photographic opportunity. Exposed rock shelfs at low tide draw the adventurous ones a little closer to the wave action - but be careful, as it's quite possible to get the cuffs of your pants wet when looking through the viewfinder.

With lookouts along the cliff top, a meandering walking path, seats facing the ocean, grassy areas ideal for picnickers, a surf club abuzz with activity, and a creek at the mercy of the tide, photographers have an abundance of subject matter to explore.

I love watching the safe swimming flags fluttering in the breeze, people entering the water with their boards, kids making sandcastles, and surf lifesavers keeping a keen eye on the water.

Spring Creek enters the ocean near the Torquay Surf Lifesaving Club, and when the creek is gently flowing, it is a genuine point of interest and a minor challenge for photographers to negotiate as they walk towards Rocky Point.

This stretch of coastline is within a comfortable 1-hour and 20 minute drive from Melbourne. A brilliant location for a day trip, with modern facilities nearby.

Equipment suggestions
When it comes to what equipment to take for a photo walk, I keep my kit in a Lowepro backpack because it allows me to have both hands free. A selection of zoom lenses covering wide-angle to telephoto allows for versatility. A polariser filter and neutral density filters, a tripod, and a cable remote switch all come in handy. I highly recommend the use of lens hoods.

Travel Photography - Special Events

Photographing at Special Events is another exciting aspect to travel photography. Indoor and outdoor performances require good concentration and a sound knowledge of equipment and etiquette. Flash photography is generally regarded as a no-no, as it spoils the ambience and blinds the artist.

Jimmy Barnes always attracts a big audience, and during March 2011 he performed in front of thousands at the North Melbourne Football Ground in Victoria as part of the Aussie Rock on Arden concert. Being a warmish day, the sweat was evident on Barnes and the crowd. A great day - a great outdoor performance.

I used my 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II USM lens at 200mm to photograph Jimmy Barnes. In low light, good equipment and a steady hand is required to capture sharp images as performers like Barnes are always moving on stage. ISO 1600, 1/250sec, f/2.8.

At the 2011 Australian Photographic Society National Digital Exhibition, this photograph received an acceptance award. A nice reward, and a bonus on top of what was an enjoyable concert.

Merimbula is an absolute gem of a spot on the Sapphire Coast in New South Wales. The forests go all the way down to the bays, and on Merimbula's Top Lake, which is renowned for fishing, I stalked this White-faced Heron for over an hour. With the bird walking in and out of the mangroves, and almost playing hard to get in the viewfinder, I had my work cut out in photographing this feathered friend.

I used my Canon EF 400mm f/5.6 L USM lens with the camera attached to a monopod to capture this shot. I really needed that extra steadiness of using a monopod to help produce this sharp shot. A great challenge. Travel photography of Australian wildlife can be so inspiring.

At the 2011 Grenfell Henry Lawson Festival of Arts Photography Competition and Exhibition, I was awarded Runner-Up in the Science and Nature Section for this image. A great buzz, and a beaut reward for the effort.

Dog Rocks at Batesford is well known amongst the Victorian photographic community as a venue to make some magnificent landscape photographs. Located 10 kilometres west of Geelong, Dog Rocks is a changeable landscape with the windswept tree being deciduous, and during summer the surrounding grasses turn brown. The rocks were formed 365 million years ago and are the oldest rocks known of in Victoria.

As a tourist attraction, Shear Outback at Hay ranks quite highly in my book. Located on the Long Paddock touring route in outback New South Wales, the shearing shed was originally situated on a property at Murray Downs, NSW. It was a working shed until operations ceased at Murray Downs in 1998. The shed's frame consists of River Red Gum and Oregon and is clad with corrugated iron. The shed was relocated to Shear Outback for display purposes, and is a terrific place for travel photographers to work on their craft.

Every so often a sense of anticipation washes over me about a far away tourist attraction. Planning a trip which encompasses a visit to a sheep shearing shed – one which requires a fee to be paid – may not be at the top of everyone’s list of things to do. The intrigue surrounding Shear Outback was enough for me to drive from Melbourne to Hay to check out what it was all about.

Located in the New South Wales outback town of Hay, on the Long Paddock touring route, Shear Outback is an attraction that is Australian to the core. With a Shearers Hall of Fame, a windmill the size of a baby wind turbine, and an ornate indoor display of sheep shears, how much more dinky-di could it be?

As an Aussie bloke in his forties, I’m embarrassed to say I’d never witnessed a sheep being shorn, so Shear Outback provided me the chance to witness Glen, a professional shearer and about-to-retire Aussie rules footballer, using some fancy motorised clippers. Unfortunately, there was no clicking of the shears in the shed with its dappled light, just the humming noise of the clippers and a slight struggle from a couple of sheep.

I was given a brief lesson from Glen about a day in the life of a shearer. From the equipment they use, to the way they dress, it was all news to me. In many respects, the life of a shearer has changed from the old days where they now travel locally to give a flock of sheep their free haircut.

The Shearers Hall of Fame features mounted boards containing profiles and achievements celebrating various shearers who have given back to the trade. Henry Salter MBE, Kevin Sarre and John Hutchinson OAM may not be household names, but their achievements are noteworthy.

Shearers Hall of Fame

Henry Salter (1907-1997) was inducted into the hall of fame in 2002. He learnt to shear sheep at age 16 at Kerang in Victoria. At 18, he landed his first job as a shearer and sheared only 41 sheep on his first day. On his third day, his tally had reduced to 30 due to being that sore he could hardly move.

Kevin Sarre (1933-1995) a five-time Australian shearing champion sheared 200 sheep in a day with his left hand, just to prove he could do it. His tally-hi shearing technique reduced shearing time by up to 30 seconds per sheep. On 26 October, 1965, he set an Australian record by machine-shearing 346 full-grown merino sheep in 7 hours and 48 minutes at Batesworth Station near Penshurst.

Kevin Sarre

John Hutchinson, born 1943, is a third generation shearer and was taught to shear by his father. A six-time Australian shearing champion, John found satisfaction in training and teaching, and was awarded the OAM for doing so. He was inducted into the hall of fame in 2002.

For kids, and kids at heart, there’s a beaut opportunity in store. You can pretend to be shearing a sheep and have your photo taken by a relative or friend; however grabbing the sheep around the throat and smiling for the camera is a look which had me in stitches.

I came away from Shear Outback with a greater knowledge, respect and understanding of farming families and their lives in the bush. An experience I highly recommend.

Australian Photography magazine monthly competitions

Australian Photography magazine is conducting some terrific monthly photography competitions via its website, and the prize each month is well worth pursuing.

The themes to date have been:

During June their competition theme was 'Red', so I entered a portrait of Jon Stevens of Noiseworks, which had a red light shining on his face as he performed live in concert in Melbourne at the North Melbourne Football Ground in March 2011. I missed out on the prize, but it was a great opportunity to display my work amongst a very high standard of entries.

The entrance to the car park is via the roundabout at the intersection of The Boulevard and Fawkner Street, Essendon. Melway Map 28 B6.

The Australian Photographic Society is again conducting its popular national digital photography competition in 2011. I have been a member of the society since 2000 and again look forward to competing in this competition.

National competition and exhibition
I am thrilled to have achieved these awards in what is a highly regarded national competition and exhibition. I am most grateful to judges Holly and Seth for acknowledging my work.

Journey to Grenfell
In a couple of days, I will be making the 690-kilometre journey to Grenfell to enjoy the photography exhibition and to view the fine work of my peers. Whilst at the festival, I will also be visiting the Grenfell Men's Shed, watching the Guinea Pig Races, and viewing the photography of members of the Grenfell Camera Club.

Exhibiting eight photographic prints during the 54th Grenfell Henry Lawson Festival of Arts 2011

The 54th Grenfell Henry Lawson Festival of Arts begins on Friday June 10 and runs through to Monday June 13, 2011. It is a unique Australiana-style festival that displays high quality works of Australian artists.

With the major focus being on the arts of painting, photography, poetry, and short story writing, the festival will proudly award four bronze statuettes in recognition of the finest work in each of the four categories.

As winner of the 2008 bronze statuette for photography, I appreciate the continued opportunity and support that the festival provides to Australian photographers. The photography competition and exhibition is open to professional and amateur Australian photographers.

Photography Coordinator
This year sees local professional photographer Denise Yates in the role of Photography Coordinator for the festival. Denise said she has "received some amazing prints so far", and is grateful to those who have entered the exhibition.

Denise said she cannot wait to show the festival visitors the amazing photographic work in the new exhibition venue at 117 Main Street Grenfell during this year's festival.

My Exhibition Entries
This year, I will be exhibiting eight professionally printed, mounted and matted photographic prints as part of the photography exhibition.

Digital Works
Each of my images is professionally printed on Kodak Professional Supra Endura lustre photographic paper by Digital Works in Hallam, Victoria.

Ausdart - Picture Framing Specialist
The professional mounting and matting of my images is the fine work of talented duo Kevin and Linda Chen of Ausdart - Picture Framing Specialist, North Coburg, Victoria. Kevin and Linda are proud to be involved in producing the works for the exhibition and are looking forward to hearing feedback regarding the exhibition.

Each print is mounted on 5mm self adhesive white foamcore and finished with a white mat for rigidity and for exhibition presentation. Each print is for sale at the exhibition for $88.00, and can be framed by any professional framer.

Mental Health First Aid

The Mental Health First Aid course is designed to train members of the public to provide help to people who are developing mental health problems and require assistance in crisis situations. The course is not designed to train people to provide diagnoses and on-going professional treatment.

Delivery of the Standard course is over 12 hours, with four topics each comprising three hours.

Topics include:

Depression
Anxiety Disorders
Psychosis
Substance Use Disorders

People undertaking the course are instructed to provide mental first aid to people who may be:

Suicidal
Having a panic attack
Recently experienced a traumatic event
Threatening behaviour
Drug overdosing

A range of studies, including randomised controlled trials, have shown that Mental Health First Aid training improves knowledge, reduces stigmatising attitudes, and increases first aid actions towards people with mental health problems.

The course has spread internationally and is now is taught in Australia, Canada, England, Finland, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Singapore, South Africa, Thailand, USA and Wales.

Each country that implements the course, adapts it to suit their culture and health system. Information is disseminated in a manner best suited to local conditions.

The Mental Health First Aid training course was created in Canberra in 2001 by Betty Kitchener and Tony Jorm. In 2009 there were over 850 accredited instructors covering every state and territory in Australia.

The program is auspiced by the Orygen Research Centre, Department of Psychiatry, University of Melbourne.

If you are a professional or amateur photographer, you may like to consider entering the 2011 Grenfell Henry Lawson Festival of Arts Photography Exhibition and competition.

This year sees a changing of the guard in that Tim and Amy Wood have handed over the reigns as exhibition Coordinator to professional photographer Denise Yates. Tim and Amy did the festival proud by successfully reigniting the exhibition a few years ago to a point where the main prize is now highly sought after by Australian professional and amateur photographers.

I would like to acknowledge the terrific voluntary contributions made by Tim and Amy, and say a personal thank you to them. As the winner of the bronze statuette for photography at the 2008 Grenfell Henry Lawson Festival of Arts, the hospitality given to me by Tim and Amy was first class as they invited me to attend the festival and awards dinner and helped arrange my accommodation. They are a credit to the festival and to their hometown of Grenfell.

Bronze Statuette Winner

Denise Yates is a professional photographer from Grenfell and one her objectives as the newly appointed coordinator is to raise the standard of the exhibition and competition whereby entries sought must comply with the overall dimensions of 16 x 20 inches. I believe this is a great step forward for the festival, as the entries submitted will provide for a more professional looking exhibition.

I believe Denise is working on improving the lighting for this years exhibition, so that can only help raise the overall presentation to the many visitors who will see the exhibition from June 10-13, 2011 at 117 Main Street, Grenfell, New South Wales, Australia.

I will be participating in this year's exhibition and have booked my accommodation for three nights in Grenfell so I can attend the photography exhibition and enjoy the festivities. I am looking forward to catching up with friends and meeting new ones.

A day at Torquay on the Great Ocean Road

Just recently, Bronwyn and I enjoyed a daytrip to Torquay on the Great Ocean Road for a relaxing day of walking, sightseeing and photography. During this time of the year, the angle of the sun is lower in the northern sky and it provides good conditions for taking photos throughout the day.

Being only 1 hour and 20 minutes from Melbourne, and at the beginning of the Great Ocean Road, it is an ideal daytrip location for those of us living in the suburbs.

We enjoyed a leisurely two-hour walk in sunny conditions along the main beach from the scenic Point Danger to Rocky Point, which is near the Torquay Surf Club.

Along the way, I took photographs of the lookout at Point Danger; the beach and surging waves; exposed rock ledges during low tide; panoramic views overlooking the main beach; people relaxing on the beach; surf rescue equipment and fit-looking surf lifesavers; the area where Spring Creek enters the ocean; and the photogenic geological features around Rocky Point.

One thing that has greatly impressed me about this area over the years is that there are so many opportunities to take photographs. Everywhere I look, I see interesting subject matter that is worth photographing. It is best to leave the car behind and walk around this area for a few hours, not only for the exercise, but to enjoy the fresh air and scenery.

I am currently developing some photography outing ideas that people could book for a reasonable fee and gain a better knowledge of travel photography and the various photogenic areas along the Great Ocean Road.

Incorporated into the day's outing will be a social aspect where the group can chat, enjoy a meal together and take some great photos during the day. Jimmy Barnes and friends rock Aussie Rock on Arden

It's rare to get the opportunity to see some of Australia's best rock'n'roll talent assembled in one place in Melbourne to perform an outdoor gig over seven hours. But when that occasion arises, it's best to book tickets fast and prepare your best-looking black shirt.

Last Saturday between 3-10pm, the North Melbourne Football Club hosted Aussie Rock on Arden featuring Jimmy Barnes, Jon Stevens and Noiseworks, Ian Moss and Shannon Noll. With the temperature reaching 30 degrees Celcius, things were hot and sweaty both on and off the stage. Fold-up chairs and picnic blankets were the order of the day for the patrons who gathered on the oval, along with plenty of water, sunscreen, hats and sunglasses.

First of the headline acts to perform was Ian 'Mossy' Moss. Formerly of Cold Chisel, Moss performed a set which included his solo hits Telephone Booth and Tuckers Daughter from his first album Matchbook, plus My Baby and Bow River which he wrote and performed during his years with 'Chisel'.

TV personality and comedian Peter Hellier was MC for the event and his close friend and Collingwood footballer wannabe Brian 'Strauchnie' Strauchan made a brief yet memorable appearance. Whilst Shannon Noll was on stage belting out What about me, Strauchnie saw fit to enter from stage right and begin hollering out What about Strauchnie. Being typically not-so-humble in the company of real talent, Strauchnie soon realised he was out of his vocal league and went back to wherever it is that he loiters in between engagements.

Shannon Noll opened with Loud, which so happens to be my favourite track of his. From the days of obscurity where he was discovered on Australian Idol in 2003, Noll's performance and voice has matured to a point where his presence in such popular company was warranted. His stage performance quickly commanded the attention of the crowd and they in turn responded to his highly-charged performance. The ladies just love him.

Noiseworks have re-formed and with Jon Stevens out front are playing as good as ever. Long regarded as one of the country's most under-rated acts during the 1980s, Stevens announced to their fans that Noiseworks will be recording a new album - their first in 19 years.

Noiseworks' performance was regarded by many in the crowd as the best of the night with Stevens's voice and energy reminiscent of decades gone by. Stevens is ageing like a fine wine and is looking remarkably fit - a credit to him.

Stevens dedicated Touch to those suffering from the aftermath of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami disaster.

Jimmy Barnes was the headline act of the evening and deservedly so. In the style Australians are becoming accustomed to seeing, he quickly commanded the full attention of the audience. Barnes has arguably become the elder statesman of Australian rock and seems to be revelling in his role.

Barnes, who was accompanied on stage during his 90-minute performance by three family members, finished the night strongly by pleasing his screaming fans with Driving Wheels and Working Class Man.

Current progress with the Diploma of Editing (Publishing)

In August 2010 I enrolled in the National Editor course with Australian College QED. The course is part of the Nationally Recognised Training framework and on completion I will be awarded a Diploma of Editing (Publishing).

My purpose for undertaking this course is to increase my skill levels in the publishing industry because I'm on the verge of commencing a book. By commencing a book I mean to undertake strategic planning whereby making it profitable. I'm currently in search of a small business specialist to assist me in developing a comprehensive business plan for the publication.

I have the concept of the book firmly etched in my mind and believe there is a growing market for the style of publication I wish to write and publish. I'm looking to make it an interactive publication where readers become inspired to improve their life. I suspect the publication will see me travelling to various parts of Australia due to wanting to meet people.

To date I've completed six assignments in the course and I'm pleased with the grades I'm achieving. The course material is well presented and the feedback from my tutor Leila Kertesz is informative and encouraging.

My strategy is to complete (on average) one assignment per month as I find this to be a reasonable balance with other commitments I have. As a correspondence course, the benefit is that I can dedicate study time to suit my lifestyle.

I remember the days—before Facebook and iPhones—when I’d peel back the foil paper of a neatly-wrapped chocolate Easter egg and begin to ponder its fate. Inevitably I’d begin playing with my food and go through the annual Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall ritual. I’ve had Liz Swanton from Sapphire Coast Tourism on the case and she’s come up with some great Easter holiday ideas. “If your kids are captivated by critters, the Sapphire Coast offers fascination aplenty in the school holidays,” she said.

Liz says the Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre at Eden is offering a tailored-to-you program of workshops themed ‘soft and squishy’, which is aimed at de-mystifying underwater creatures. For a group of four or more, the Centre will schedule a discovery session to fit your holiday timetable. In business with a new logo

There’s much to be said for a business having a logo as it sends a clear signal to people that you’re “in business.”

A few weeks ago I was reading through the forums on Flying Solo – Australia’s solo and micro business community, and read some comments by graphic designer Daniel Abela. I was impressed by Daniel’s spirit and his passion for wanting to satisfy his customers.

Whilst browsing Daniel’s site, I noticed that his sense of humour is similar to mine. Seeing someone’s character shine through via their business site is something that impresses me. Soloists are well placed to do this and it’s something I endeavour to do.

My initial approach to Daniel was straightforward:

"Hi Daniel, I'm seeking some design work and require a logo design. I see you can design for a letterhead, business card, and other stuff, too. Would you be interested in doing some work for me for my business which is Darren Stones Visual Communications? PS - I've become aware of your service via Flying Solo."

Daniel promptly responded and was keen to assist. From there, things moved along seamlessly between us to a point where I’m happy to say that I love my new business logo. I’m “in business” folks.

Depression - the lived experience has an upside

Hi folks, this message is directed towards people such as myself who have lived the experience of depression, are currently battling with the illness, and for those who are considering becoming involved with beyondblue’s blueVoices.

beyondblue, Australia’s national depression initiative, has just released a video that features the new beyondblue CEO Dawn O’Neil AM. Dawn outlines the vital work of blueVoices members and Ambassadors in assisting beyondblue to further develop its resources, programs, research and campaigns.

An update on myself and how I’m feeling
I’m happy to say that I’m no longer taking anti-depressant medication and have recently begun re-branding my business and developing a new range of products and services.

I’d like to thank all of you who have supported and encouraged me. It’s been a bumpy ride since I broke down in Centrelink in September 2009, but I’m now tackling my (new) life and my (new) business with a brand new enthusiasm. I dare say a new book is about to go on the drawing board – the working title is: Ticking boxes.

“I’ve had a love-hate relationship with pelicans since one stole my freshly-caught trevally during low tide at Merimbula about 10 years ago. So what if I was silly enough to leave it 100 metres away on a sand bank? The pelican that cleverly manoeuvred my trevally down its neck will be indelibly etched in my memory. And they poop everywhere. One of them has even had the arrogance to display bad toilet manners whilst flying above me. Bombs away! These days it’s different. There’s a new breed of pelican that can’t fly and poop, and they’re quite photogenic, too.” – Darren Stones

Hello and welcome to the Let's See Australia travel journalism and photography competition. This is the inaugural competition for Discover Australia magazine in its new format.

Discover Australia magazine recently changed from a PDF-style magazine to a new website format whereby providing a better platform for growth, whilst also offering greater opportunities for those wanting to improve and share their skills and become published alongside industry professionals.

Discover Australia magazine is respected by industry professionals for the opportunities it's offering writers and photographers, and is well supported by most major Australian tourism image libraries.

The birth of Discover Australia magazine was within the Australian Travel Photography and Writing (ATP&W) group, which was founded by Darren Stones in December 2008 at RedBubble. The group is now on the verge of reaching 1000 members and it's been envisaged that accelerated growth will occur with the ATP&W group and Discover Australia magazine being affiliated.

So, what's the Let's See Australia competition about? As you can read below, the guidelines offer scope for travel writers and photographers to exhibit and hone their skills, whilst also having the opportunity to have their works published. There are prizes being offered with the view of encouraging and inspiring entrants in this area of journalism.

Steve Parish: 50 Years Photographing Australia

Visitor Information Centres around Australia are where people usually get their first taste of Steve Parish’s magnificent Australiana photography. Wildlife books, calendars, diaries, discovery guides, fun books for kids, coffee table and instructional books are just some of the vast range of products that Steve Parish Publishing offers.

I recently interviewed Steve, and thought it was interesting that as a passionate advocate for wildlife protection, he says that governments need to consider implementing policies which lessen human impact on the environment.

Darren Stones - After 50 years photographing Australia, and seemingly still having the fire in the belly, what inspires you to travel and take photographs around Australia?

Steve Parish - A sheer love of the landscapes and wild places of this nation, and the flora and fauna that inhabit them, is what keeps me on the road — as well as the knowledge that the only way people will ever protect nature is if they connect with it. My publications help make that connection. I know not everyone has the luxury of spending half of the year or more on the road visiting far-flung Aussie paradises —let alone five decades travelling Australia! — but I hope that when they see photos in one of my books or calendars they think “How amazing. I want to go there one day and see a tree-kangaroo for myself”, and I’m sure they then will. And when they do, they’ll care so much more about the fate of that animal. That’s inspiring, to think I can inspire someone else to care more about the natural world.

Darren Stones - Steve, as an experienced photographer, how do you prepare yourself mentally for a photographic journey on the road for weeks away from home?

Steve Parish - I find that for me, there is a great solace in solitude, so I don’t prepare myself mentally as much as it prepares me! Travelling and photographing is not a job to me, it’s a release. Being on the road, just me and a tent and a camera, frees me from the everyday stresses of running a very successful Australian natural history publishing company, and allows me unbridled creativity and freedom. It gives me time and space to think and feel and, for me, that’s extremely cathartic. Most times it feels like I am more at home on the road than anywhere else!

Darren Stones - Who assists you with your photography when out in the field and what are the key things they do to help you?

Steve Parish - My wife, Catherine Prentice, travels with me a lot, and Greg and Emma Harm, two of my talented image library staff, also accompany me on occasion. They all keep me grounded, help with equipment, navigate when necessary, and keep a track of where we’ve been and when, which is useful for when we add photographic metadata to the database. Greg and Em also sometimes help with post-production, and of course, they’re all good company. All of them usually also take their own photographs too when on the road and I’m always astonished by how different each person’s photographic “vision” of a place can be. Sometimes we can be in the same place at the same time, but the individual shots are very clearly unique to that photographer. I love that.

Darren Stones - Before leaving home, what type of research do you undertake about the subjects you intend to photograph? Do you call on other people to assist you with your photography research?

Steve Parish - After five decades of photographing Australia, I find a lot of the places I’m visiting are like old friends, so I know what to expect. But part of my work is not just in taking images but also in interpreting them for others in books, so that I can create educational resources like the recent Nature Watch range we did for children. So I do spend time in museums and reading about local history. We also produce a range of calendars every year, so it’s imperative I research what’s new in each city or region architecturally and any new popular attractions.

Above all, I like to research the unique or endangered animals and plants that make their homes in a region and do my best to find and photograph them. Also, it always helps to understand who the bushies or “characters” are in small outback towns, because they spin the best yarns and fill you in on local history. I’m lucky also to have a dedicated team of editors and fact checkers in the office who do their own research and fill in any blanks for me.

Darren Stones - What have you discovered to be your greatest challenges when travelling to various locations in Australia to photograph landscapes, seascapes and wildlife?

Steve Parish - As I say in my Wild Australia Photographic Guides: Weather, weather, weather, and climate! When you live in Queensland everyone expects bright, hot summer days with not a cloud in the sky, but we all know that those days are not great for photography because there are too many contrasting overhead shadows and because clouds and weather features make beautiful enhancers for landscape and travel shots.

As a photographer, there’s so much I can manage — my equipment, the time and date of travel, how many days to stay, etc — but I can’t control the weather. There’s nothing more disappointing than getting all the way to Litchfield National Park only to have to leave because it’s boggy and wet the whole time, or trying to get a wonderful turbid seascape in Leeuwin–Naturaliste National Park only to find it’s flat and grey when I visit. Of course, I work around it as much as possible and try to get dawn and dusk shots or wait for the clouds, storms or interesting weather to arrive, but I would say it’s my greatest challenge to be patient on clear weeks where every day is like Groundhog Day. I love dramatic, unusual weather that brings something different to an image.

Darren Stones - Steve, what’s been the funniest moment you’ve experienced whilst taking photographs?

Steve Parish - Hard to pinpoint just one — there’s been so many amusing moments over the years, which is another reason to keep me on the road. One that springs to mind is that recently, up in the Daintree, I was bailed up in a thicket by a male cassowary. I was so in awe of this majestic bird and his chicks, that, despite keeping a fair distance, I failed to notice his chicks had seen my shadow and started following me instead of him. Well, Dad didn’t like that one bit, of course! In a flash he turned around and charged me. They’re bloody big birds and an altercation with one is the last thing any photographer wants, so I bolted for a little stand of trees and vines and holed up inside, while he tried his hardest to get at me. Actually, it was pretty scary at the time, but very funny afterwards once he’d conceded I wasn’t a threat if I stayed out of his way — I did too!

Darren Stones - As a passionate advocate for protecting Australia’s nature areas and wildlife, what do you believe are the greatest challenges our governments face to ensure that the impact of people on our nature areas and wildlife is minimized?

Steve Parish - Well, firstly I concede that government agencies have very difficult jobs to do when it comes to wildlife conservation — there are just so many issues to juggle, and a lot more research that needs to be done in order to do the job properly. When I photographed for the Queensland National Parks and Wildlife Service all those years ago, I quickly discovered how much of a political hot potato the whole issue is. But for me, the hardest thing is probably balancing the needs, or perceived needs of humans, with those of wildlife and ecosystems. We’re a very selfish species — we don’t like to share — but the truth is, we have to, and our lives can be enriched by having possums and birds in the backyard or encouraging native plants to grow in our cities.

We have to stop letting our comfort override the rights of animals that share our habitats. We have to recognise that there’s not just a dollar value in big industry but also in wildlife and habitat, and not just from tourism. Some things, like the biodiversity value and spiritual value of wild places, are priceless, but sometimes that makes it difficult to convince politicians they should be given more consideration. Everything boils down to dollars, which is a great shame as the animals don’t care about that. And I hope future generations won’t either — that they’ll realise being able to see a Koala or an endangered Northern Quoll in the wild is worth more than a mine or a new housing development.

Darren Stones - There's times when photographers are harassed in public areas for taking travel documentary style photographs. What advice do you have for photographers who encounter these sticky situations? Have you ever had to deal with any awkward situations yourself, and what did you do when confronted?

Steve Parish - I think the thing to remember is that you’re just doing your job. I can honestly say I’m rarely hassled in public, though. I’ve also found that people are happy to be included in my books and I sometimes get letters from people who recognise themselves in an incidental travel shot and are chuffed. But I think travelling with my wife helps, because it means I’m a bit less conspicuous as a professional photographer, and probably a bit less threatening than a man by himself. Of course, you have to always be careful about photographing children, so take the time to let parents know what you’re doing and get their permission. Many parents are happy to oblige and extroverted kids can make delightful subjects and love to turn on the smiles for the camera once they know you’re a professional. If confronted about photographing in a public place, sometimes it may just be easier to apologise and pack up rather than try to argue your right to be there. A lot of people are in the dark about the laws relating to public photography, but the truth is you can photograph in most public places without having to obtain a license or special permission.

Darren Stones - Steve, is there something you haven't photographed in Australia as yet that you really want to photograph?

Steve Parish - There’s an awful lot of endangered species that I haven’t seen hide nor hair of in the wild, and would love to photograph, and of course, some of the very isolated and rugged terrain in the Top End and Kimberley I’ve photographed only from the air. What I would love to do most is get back in the wetsuit and do some more diving so I can photograph marine invertebrates again. The colour down there in the ocean is truly astonishing. So I’ve made it a bit of a mission to try to get fit so I can return to scuba diving. At sixty-five, it’s ambitious, but I’m working on it.

Darren Stones - Can you share three practical photography tips that you believe a travel photographer can implement in the field to improve their travel photographs?

Steve Parish - It sounds over-simplistic, but take vertical shots, horizontal shots and shots that are framed up close and from a distance. When you later sell them to magazines or use them in books where you want to bleed the image off the page you’ll be happy you took that loosely framed shot, even if your natural instinct is to crop it close. Also, I like to take a series of shots that “tell a story”, so if the editor wants something deeper, you can provide a gallery of images that reflect the place’s landscapes, flora and fauna, culture and “spirit”.

Choose your time wisely. In Australia, the time of year is critical to the photos you’ll get. The south-west of WA for instance is just spectacular in spring, with all the wildflowers, but a few months later will have lost some of its gloss. Even if you’re photographing outback towns, you should time it to be there for local events, such as rodeos or outback races, which can help you capture the townspeople at leisure and add some colour and interest to your shots.

It’s all about mood, content and design. And of those, to me, mood is the most important. I’m a very emotional photographer and mood helps people connect with an image. You can have the best content in the world and frame it beautifully, but if an image lacks mood and emotion it will still just attract a passing glance, rather than make someone stop and truly absorb the “feel” of the moment.

Darren Stones - Do you believe it's important for travel photographers to dabble in writing about their travel and photography experiences? What do you believe is a good starting point for them to write?

Steve Parish - Absolutely, but I also recognise that not everyone is a writer. They say a picture tells a thousand words and some photographers are skilled enough to make that entirely true. Like photography, however, writing is an art form and for me, it’s about creativity. I like exploring all aspects of my creativity and that’s why I also write. I don’t write all the time, but when it comes to trying to explain what is a very personal journey, as in my new book Steve Parish: 50 Years Photographing Australia, well, I’m the only person who can truly explain what it felt like to stand there and watch that shy young Common Wallaroo staring at me, or how I got to where I was and why.

Actually, I’m very proud of Steve Parish: 50 Years Photographing Australia because I’ve always been a little insecure about my writing (particularly when I’m writing about myself), but my editors were impressed and the public response to it has been overwhelming, so it’s nice to finally feel that my writing is also a legitimate part of my creative process. I’m blown away sometimes that people are so interested in my life and my personal story of five decades doing what I do. I would say that if you do choose to write, make it personal. Make it as much of an insight as your photos are, and always have someone else edit it. They’ll pick up things you never considered or that your over-familiar eyes miss.

Darren Stones - When away from home and travelling on the road, what do you do to relax and unwind after a day of photographing?

Steve Parish - Sounds strange, but editing my photographs and adding the relevant metadata, so we can ID them in the image library, is often what I do to relax and unwind! It helps me reflect on the day I’ve had and I just love seeing those pixels on the screen and admiring the place again. It’s a far cry from the old days when you had to wait days or even week for the prints to come back from the developer or dark room. I also like to relax by watching a good film. I’m a bit of a film buff, and of course, sleep is always a luxury.

Darren Stones - What lies ahead for Steve Parish as a photographer?

Steve Parish - More of the same, but better. The great thing about getting older is that you’re always looking for new ways of doing things — you’d get bored if you didn’t! So I feel even more creative at sixty-five than I did at twenty-five. At the moment, I’m really absorbed by the abstract artistry of landscape, particularly the effect of water on stone, vegetation and ecosystems. Water really is a master architect and sculptor, as well as gardener in a sense, so I’m working on something to do with that. I’m also on a mission to catalogue Australia’s national parks again. We have so many incredible wild places and I want to be able to share them with the world.

Also, the publishing industry is undergoing a digital revolution at the moment, and I want to be at the forefront of that too, so we’re working with a company called Brisware to develop some innovative eBooks and Apps, which are an entirely different way of thinking about the concept of the “book”. I’m loving the greener, cleaner benefits of that too, and it’s adding some great interactive creativity. It really is an exciting time for book publishing and I think one that will provide great opportunities for all photographers and creative types.

Australian landscape photographer Ken Duncan says hello to a wild stallion

Recently I had the opportunity to ask Australian landscape photographer Ken Duncan a question on his Facebook fan page. Not wanting to get bogged down in technical talk, I asked Ken to share a story about an experience whilst out in the field.

Darren 'Daz' Stones - "Hi Ken,
Trust you're well, and thanks very much for this opportunity. Could you share one of your funniest moments while undertaking photography in the field?
Cheers, Darren."

Ken Duncan - "Hi Daz,
One of the funniest things that happened to me was while I was in Vermont, USA. I was waiting to take a shot called New England Reflections - you can check it out on the website - which as the title suggests, needed reflections.

There was a wild stallion in the field we were in and my assistant at the time started trying to be friendly to the horse. The next minute, this wild stallion was trying to push me and my camera into the pond. The only way to settle the horse down was to punch him in the mouth.

The horse took off and just at that time, the farmer came along, saw me on his property and stopped to warn me that there was a wild stallion in the paddock. I told the farmer, 'Don't worry, I'm Australian - we're all born in the saddle. I've already said hello to your stallion!' It must be noted that no animals were permanently injured during the capture of that photo!"

Merimbula is more than a location – it’s where X marks the spot

The evening before a crisp, still morning of potentially fulfilling photography reinforces earlier thoughts of the likelihood of recording Mother Nature’s golden light. With the forecast looking promising, the idea of awakening early from a deep slumber is all the more pleasant given I’ve researched my location and used Google maps to my advantage.

Casting my mind back pre Google map days, I vividly recall relying more on guess work and vigorously scouting locations after travelling hundreds of kilometres for a keeper or two. But how times have changed for someone like me – a research nut who adores Mr Google’s invention and how it’s allowed me to place myself wherever I wish – almost.

When perched in my home office navigating the Monday to Friday grind and attempting to earn a razoo, I cast myself forward a month or two and begin dreaming of “Location, location, location.” My heart begins to race and a clear picture begins to form in my mind. I momentarily find myself imagining where X marks the spot, fiddling with f-stops between 8 and 16, and contemplating which filter to slide into the holder. Again I’m in dreamland and projecting myself forward into the future.

Excuse me for a little while as I’m craving to surf the web. I have another X spot to investigate.

As a member of blueVoices, the consumer reference group for beyondblue, and Founder of the Australian Travel Photography and Writing group, I'm coordinating the special event, Australians travelling beyond blue.

The event is in support of beyondblue’s Anxiety and Depression Awareness Month for October 2010. It is a participation event for individuals to take part in an activity to raise awareness of anxiety and depression, and help reduce stigma.

They say Australia is the lucky country and I suspect any dinky-di Aussie would agree. Visitors from around the globe are continually attracted to the world's driest continent, and it's no wonder given the scenery on offer to enjoy. Exploring the big cities, the rich colours of the outback and the relaxed coastal resort towns is high on the agenda for many domestic and overseas travellers.

Australians are regarded as a happy-go-lucky lot, with sheilas wearing next-to-nothing on our golden beaches, whilst the blokes just chill out enjoying an ale with their mates at the pub.

Our wildlife can be shy, but it can be friendly and approachable, too. You can handfeed kangaroos in some national parks, and possibly cuddle a koala in a zoo.

The land down under is ready to embrace you and offer an experience of a lifetime. If you are like me, you can have a lifetime of experiencing the best country in the world.

Bob Katter is no loony

The 2010 Federal Election has given Independent MP Bob Katter the opportunity to put an important issue into the public domain – suicide. Whilst the majority of discussion surrounds which major party the Independents will side with, Katter has taken the bull by the horns and is the only elected representative in the spotlight willing to mention an issue which many people are reticent to discuss.

With Katter constantly being referred to as a ‘loony’ on Twitter, and in comments by readers in various online newspapers, it’s his ability to get the message out at an opportune time that is worthy of credit.

Katter has said that one farmer commits suicide every four days in his electorate of Kennedy. The sense of despair felt by those farmers who are taking such drastic action is not to be ignored. These are real working people from real working families who see no future for themselves. They are people who see no reason to live and cast a vote in the future.

Mental health has been in the spotlight during 2010, but Australia's political leaders became more concerned with the non-issue of Work Choices and stopping the boats during the election campaign.

It will be interesting to see if the leaders from each of the major parties act on what Katter is saying, or simply dismiss him as a ‘loony’. Time will tell if Katter’s comments lead to a paradigm shift.
