National Library of Australia Australian Newspapers Digitisation Program

By Darren Stones

An exciting new project has been released to the public by the National Library of Australia.

The Australian Newpapers online service is a vast collection of historic newspapers dating from 1803 to 1954.

"The National Library of Australia, in collaboration with the Australian State and Territory libraries, has commenced a program to digitise out of copyright newspapers.

"We are creating a free online service that will enable full-text searching of newspaper articles. This will include newspapers published in each state and territory from the 1800s to the mid-1950s, when copyright applies. The first Australian newspaper, published in Sydney in 1803, is included in the Program."

Text displayed in the scanned articles is electronically translated by computer, and this is leading to spelling mistakes being generated due to computers not being able to read as good as humans.

I've chosen to sign up to the service, and as time permits will carry out voluntary editing and tagging of various articles.

Samples of my editing can be viewed by visiting my Australian Newspapers profile.
