On Monday January 14, 2013, I travelled to Torquay on Victoria's Surf coast to specifically photograph Rocky Point during low tide at sunset. Fortunately, the sun was shining and this provided gorgeous lighting conditions for landscape photography.

I've never seen the tide so low at Rocky Point during my previous visits, so the opportunity to make new and unique photographs was most pleasurable.

I did plan this trip because I wanted to coincide the tide height and sunset conditions to give myself the best chance to photograph the beauty of this area.

Before making this series of photographs, I investigated another beach area to the west of Bells Beach earlier in the day for a future photographic shoot.

As you can see in these images, the sky was clear and devoid of clouds - sometimes not the ideal conditions for landscape photography, however perfect for including natural textures of the landscape.

On my recent trip to Grenfell in the New South Wales central-west, I had the opportunity to photograph the rural landscape of the area. Touring around slowly along the back roads is a great experience as new photographic opportunities are around each corner.

Perry Sandhills, Wentworth, New South Wales, Australia

Photographing outback areas can be a real challenge due to the extremes of weather and Perry Sandhills is no exception - particularly if it is hot and windy. And when travelling through an area where your time is limited, you really do have to make the most of the opportunities you have.

I photographed this section of the Perry Sandhills at Wentworth in New South Wales during the cooler months whilst touring the Murray River region. Being a photographer who prefers to shoot landscapes during the afternoon, the weather was quite pleasant on this particular day. The green grass caught my eye in amongst the sandhills and I thought this was just begging to be photographed.

Located in outback New South Wales, the sandhills originated after an ice age 40,000 years ago and have been formed by wind erosion over thousands of years.

Gibsons Beach near Port Campbell is one of those places that is often seen from the lookouts near the Twelve Apostles, but few actually take the steps down to the beach to walk along it.

As a travel photographer, there are times when the elements all come together to make for a good photograph. But being there is critical, and choosing the right time to be there does increase the chance of seeing these elements through the lens. This is one of my favourite photographs, and I think it's because I can imagine myself walking along that beach.

Rocky Point at Torquay is one of those places that looks great when the sky is blue, but takes on a menacing appearance when the storm clouds roll in.

Located on the spectacular Surf Coast in Victoria, Rocky Point served up a beaut photographic challenge on this day for myself. With showery weather creating some difficulties, and people scurrying about, it sure was a test of one’s patience.

Great fun can be had whilst undertaking travel photography, and even more so when conditions are not idyllic. Was a great way to end the day … wind, rain, and wet shoes and pants.

When viewing this image, I am reminded of how beautiful a place Torquay is. On the day I took this shot, the weather was constantly changing. Not long before I took this, there was hail.

Travel photography sure does present its challenges and I like how one minute I can be photographing scenes where the sky is clear, and the next minute seeing fantastic clouds which enhance a landscape scene.

Travelling along the Newell Highway in New South Wales during the late afternoon can be a great experience - particularly when the sun is setting.
